Deep Blue

by Paula Prosper

I’m on the ocean, baby, the deep blue sea.

Sure, the water’s deep;

Six thousand feet going down down down.

But the deep, man? It’s not the sea.

It’s the blue.

Deep blue, baby, deep blue;

Like nothing else there is.

The bluest blue I’ve ever seen.

So blue it doesn’t make sense, so deep it just won’t stop.

Ever suck on an atomic fireball?

A blazing bonfire igniting your tongue and scorching your teeth till you just can’t stand it and you have to spit it out right now, right now.

That’s how deep the blue is, baby.  Like nothing else there is.

Remember your first piano recital?

All those eyes drive right at you and they squeeze down your throat and wrap themselves tight ‘round your gut till you can’t take a wisp of breath.

That’s how deep the blue is, man.  Like nothing else there is.

Still think of that girl in seventh grade?

With those cut-offs and the string of beads around her ankle and she leans in to whisper and your skin explodes into a million sizzling pieces and your bones evaporate to nowhere.

That’s how deep the blue is, pal.  Like nothing else there is.

Did you see Hendrix play at Woodstock?

He shreds that Voodoo Child jam with fingers flashing on Stratocaster strings till that funk screams into your soul and lifts you right out of your mind.

That’s how deep the blue is, man.  Like nothing else there is.

Deep blue, baby, deep blue;

So blue it’s a thing, an entity, a phenomenon.

So deep I need to grab it, take a bite out of it, get myself inside it.

The bluest blue there’s ever been.

Deep blue, baby, deep blue.

So blue it doesn’t make sense, so deep it just won’t stop.

I can’t take my eyes off that deep blue ocean.

Like nothing else there is.
